Freelance Ghost Writer

You must consider how to hire a freelance ghost writer before you spend any of your money!

By Karen S. Cole

What is a freelance ghostwriter? Well, a ghost writer is a writer who works without taking any credit for the project, as agreed upon between the ghost writer and the client. Sometimes, however, a ghost writer may receive some form of credit for the work.

Generally, though, a ghost writer receives payment upfront for creating the work instead of getting their name listed on it. A book ghost writer doesn’t get cover credit, but may be listed on the acknowledgements page as the book’s editor. Or in some other fashion they may receive partial credit for working on the book.

A freelance writer is one who works on a per job basis with a client. Signing a contract for a particular job without working in house or on a regular basis with the client. So a freelance ghost writer is a writer who works per job, receiving pay for a writing project. Without necessarily receiving any credit for the work. The rules may vary. But a freelance ghost generally works under reasonable conditions set by the author client.

Who is a freelance ghostwriter and what do they do?

Many professional writers and editors work as freelancers in order to supplement their income. Or they solely freelance, due to the freedom of being their own bosses. And also being able to set their own hours, schedules etc. You hire a freelance ghost writer to work on a book, screenplay, music, lyrics or other project, often for one job at a time. Many such writers are published book authors and have several books to their credit.

When you hire a freelance ghost writer, check over their credentials carefully. Review their references, recommendations and samples to see if you like their style. And check to see if they have a lengthy satisfied clients list. Make sure you read over the ghost writer’s portfolio and check over their resume. You will be spending plenty of money if you hire a professional writer, so be sure you hire a great freelance ghost writer. One who will ably assist you in the creation and editing of your writing project.

Rather than hire a freelance ghost writer, could I become a ghost writer?

Would you like to become a freelance ghost writer? If so, be prepared to write regularly for a living, once you have established yourself in the writing field. You must get several published works to your credit. Under your own name at first. Then you should create and publish a ghostwriting services website. Search engine optimization is necessary to generate new client leads. Once you have set up your shingle, ghostwriting jobs should start coming in. And so, you will have begun your new career as a freelance ghost writer! – remember, only use one “w”
